Lot description:

Ionia, Magnesia on the Maeander. Otacilia Severa. Augusta, A.D. 244-249. ? (29 mm, 9.57 g, 6 h). Tychikos, grammateus. M ΩTAKI CEYHPA CE, diademed and draped bust of Otacilia Severa right / E(ΠI) (ΓP) TYX-I-K(OY) B (NE) MAΓ(NH)-TΩN, Hephaistos seated right, raising hammer to strike object (a coin die?) held with tongs against anvil before him. Schultz 481 (V2/R6), and p. 119 (this coin cited as dies V?/R?); SNG von Aulock 7924 (same dies); Waddington 1759 (same dies). A neat reverse possibly depicting Hephaistos minting coins. Extremely rare with only three recorded specimens. Green patina with some red-brown. Very fine.

Ex Alex G. Malloy Collection; Thomas Ollive Mabbott Collection, pt. I (Hans Schulman, 6-11 June 1969), 1550 (misdescribed).

Schultz describes this coin on p. 119, but since she had not seen it nor was it illustrated in the Mabbott sale catalogue (and to confuse matters further, it was misdescribed in the Mabbott catalogue), she was unable to compare it to the two other known specimens. It is from the same dies as both the von Aulock and the Waddington specimens.

It is not clear exactly what Hephaistos is holding with his tongs. The object is very small and may depict the god striking coins.

Estimate: 150 USD
